View ProjectEmotional Distress in Pregnancy and Post Birth
This study was undertaken to propose clinicians re-frame perinatal depression as emotional distress during pregnancy and postbirth. Antenatal and postnatal (perinatal) depression carries negative implications and is both under and over-diagnosed. Indeed, a review of commonly used screening tools for perinatal depression found most have not been validated for perinatal women. A diagnosis of depression consists of several domains: sleeping and eating disturbances, anxiety and insecurity, emotional lability, loss of self, mental confusion, guilt and shame, and suicidal ideation. It is quite common for perinatal women to experience any of these domains for valid reasons.

View ProjectThe development and implementation of an enhanced digital alcohol screening algorithm and training package for primary health care settings.
This project developed an enhanced screening algorithm for the assessment of alcohol-related risk in older adults in primary health care contexts. The algorithm included chronic medical conditions and prescription medications known to increase the potential alcohol-related risk for older adult drinkers. The ABC Alcohol screening tool was updated to include the new algorithm and tested in Whanganui general practices.

The recent primary care sector interviews support the development of a series of educational modules hosted on Learn on Line, addressing the various roles, systems and content related to cancer screening, supplemented by other occasional aligned educational resources. A series of sector interviews is reported which expands on understanding what primary care want for cancer screening education.

In 2020 Whanganui Regional Health Network implemented the Gout Stop Programme within primary care. This 12-week gout management programme aimed to increase access to medication and to improve patient gout health literacy. A particular focus was to reduce barriers for Māori to good gout management.
